Chapter 2 Fall in Love (One day, Oliver and Jennifer are studying in the dorm.) O: Cavilleri. I’ve got nothing abainst music, but must you play it while we strdy? J: I’m studying in the music, Preppie. It’s called analysis of form. O: Yeah. J: You know you’;re going to flunk out if you just sit there watching me studying. O: I’m not watching you studying, I’m studying. J: Bullshit. You’re looking at my legs. O: Listen Cavilleri. You’re not that great-looking. J: I know, but can I help it if you think so? O: Let’s change the subject, huh. J: I wasn’t aware that there was a subject. O: You’re under the mistaken impression that I wanted to make love to you. J: Was I? O: But I’m not interested. Definitely not interested. J: Good, at least we’ve got one thing in common. O: Look, Cavilleri. I know your game and I’m tired of playing it. You’re the supreme Radcliffe smartass. The best, you put down anything in pants. But verbal volleyball is not my idea of a relationship. If that’s what you think it’s all about. Why don’t you just go back to your music world and good luck. Say, I think you’re scared. You put up a big glass wall to keep from getting hurt, and also keeps you from getting touched. It’s a risk, isn’t it, Jenny? At least I had the guts to admit what I felt. Someday you are going to have to come up with the courage to admit you care. J: I care (Jennifer is lying on Oliver’s laps. They are both readying.) O: I’m studying. I’m really studying. J: Shhh. I’m studying. O: Sorry. J: Oliver? I love you! (Oliver attends Jennifer’s piano test, and is very proud of her. After the test, they are on the road.) O: I can’t believe how great you were. J: Yeah, that tells me how much you know about music. O: I know enough. J: Wise up, would you please, Barret. I was not great, I was not even all ivy. I was just OK, OK? O: OK. What I mean is that you should always keep at it. J: Who said I’m not going to keep at it, for God’s sake. I’m going to study with Nadia Boulange, alright? O: Who? J: Next year, I have a scholarship in Paris. O: Paris? J:Yeah. I’ve never been to Europe. I can hardly wait. O: How long have you known about this? J: Come on. Oli, don’t be stupid, would you please? It’s inevitable. O: What is? J: That we’re going to graduate and then go our separate ways. You’ll go on to Law school. O: What are you talking about? J: You’re a preppie millionaire. And I’m a social zero. O: What does that have to do with going our separate ways. We’re together, now, aren’t we? We ‘re happy. J: Look. Harvard’s like a big Santa Claus bag staffed full of all kinds of crazy toys. When the holiday is over, they shake you out and you’re got to go back where you belong. O: This has been a little bit more than a holiday, Jenny. You’re going back to Grandstone Rhode Island and bake cookies? J: Pastries! And don’t make fun of my father. O: Then don’t leave me, Jenny. Please. J: Yeah. But what about my scholarship and what about Paris I have never seen in my whole God damn life? O: What about our marriage? J: Who has said anything about marriage? O: I’m saying it now. J: You want to marry me? O: Yeah. J: Why? O: Because. J: That’s a good reason. ![]() |
